Introduction

Congratulations on choosing to detox and cleanse. People detox for all kinds of reasons. Perhaps you need to lose weight, tire easily, have cloudy thinking, are aging prematurely, have minor but ongoing health problems, or are experiencing a serious illness. You’re ready for your diet to support your well-being.

My experience with many hundreds of clients proves that the benefits gained by a balanced detox and elimination program give life-long positive results. You have in your hands the tools you need to enjoy satisfying meals and to regain your health.

As you care about your well-being, perhaps you’ve followed the popular—but mistaken—idea of a healthy diet: low fat, a little chicken or fish, and you try to fill up on salads and fruit. But the problem is that you’re not satisfied. Therefore, you frequently nibble on almonds, chocolate, and more baked goods than you’d like to admit. Despite your hard efforts, your health complaints are increasing.

Or perhaps you’ve cleansed with a fast or an extreme diet. Yes, you do feel better temporarily, but then, bam! You’re indulging again. How frustrating, demeaning and hard on your health.

You’re now ready for a balanced diet that enables you to cleanse and build your energy. And this diet provides guidelines that you’ll use for the rest of your life. You won’t have to diet again. You’re on a new page and finished with swinging from depravation to indulgence.

Detox and Cleanse works because it eliminates from your diet only the foods that are taxing you while including an abundance of nurturing foods. It gives your system a break from the foods that compromise your health. Some foods are universally problematic and some are commonly problematic. You’ll avoid these foods for either one week, or for three weeks, depending on your current health. This program is far more than an elimination diet, as you’ll also be cleansing while you rebuild your energy and health

Preparing for Success

This Detox and Cleanse solution is based on my clinical experience over the past 35 years. You’ll be feasting on a balance of meat, whole grains, legumes, fresh and seasonal produce, and a wide spectrum of fats, including saturated fats. (If you are vegetarian, you’ll substitute beans—but not soy products—for meat in the menu plans.)

My plan takes into account your specific needs. Let’s face it––when it comes to diet, there’s no universal formula. We all have unique needs. This book gives you the basic tools to fine-tune a sound diet to your individual energetic needs.

I’ll be using the terms energy and energetic in a way that may be new to you. In the West we describe a food’s energy in terms of calories. In Asia, it refers to a food’s potential for energizing, cleansing, calming or building specific bodily functions and organs. This Chinese pharmacopeia of the energetic properties of foods has been in continual use for more than 2,000 years. It works

Sample Recipe

Emerald Breakfast Frappe

Here’s a yummy smoothie-like frappe to help your body cleanse and detox. You’ve all heard “eat your leafy greens,” but how much spinach can you eat in a day? This enlivening blend makes it easy to get your greens. Chlorophyll-dense foods enrich your blood, purify toxins, counter inflammation and aid your renewal on a cellular level. For a truly refreshing way to start your day,  go green!

 Serves 1

2 cups romaine lettuce or spinach, chopped
1 cup chopped basil or parsley with stems
1 mango, peeled, pitted and chopped
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Loosely pack the lettuce, basil, mango and cinnamon in a blender. Add water to 1/2 inch below the top of the ingredients. Blend until smooth, scraping down the blender’s sides as necessary. Scrape into a bowl and serve with a spoon.

Variations:

  • Smoothie: Add enough additional water to make a beverage.
  • Other greens: Freely add or substitute arugula, basil, bok choy, celery, celery with leaves, chard, Chinese cabbage, cilantro, collards, dill or kale. (Avoid the more gas-forming greens such as cabbage and broccoli.)
  • Other fruits: Freely substitute fresh apples, apricots, Asian pears, bananas, berries, pitted cherries, grapes, melon, nectarines, papaya, peaches, pears or plums.
  • Dried fruit: Substitute dried fruits for the fresh, such as apples, pitted prunes or raisins. Soak dried fruit until well plumped, for 2 hours or overnight. Add both the rehydrated fruits and their soaking water.
  • Savory Frappe: In place of a fruit, substitute bell pepper, chile peppers, cucumber, tomato or shredded beets or carrots.
  • Smooth Moving Frappe: To add laxative properties, include dried and rehydrated figs or pitted prunes.
